I WANNA ROCK WITH MY CREW

Yesterday I discovered two fantastic new songs of the hip hop variety.
Hip hop is a genre I have begun to take a strong liking to and the Jay-Z, Kanye, Drake invasion has already been unleashed on my predominantly indie/ rock/ pop I-Pod. So with my newly acquired taste for such artists and their hip hop/ r & b genres, I seem to find myself getting lost in their music as it escapes my radio speakers. I nod my head at every beat, my body seems to start street and break dancing like I'm a member of Diversity, despite the fact that I am a crap dancer, and I feel cool as... and I like it.

So which two songs were bestowed upon me yesterday, I hear you say? Well that would be an offering from a brilliant up and coming artist, Maxsta, and well known established act Drake. The first, Maxsta, has the gloriously cool 'I Wanna Rock' which is fuelled by a series of epic beats guaranteed to get you doing your best hip hop and street moves, of which I am known to do frequently. Maxsta plays about with the tempo in an effective way, so that just as you're abosrbing the beat accompanying the catchy chorus hook 'I wanna, I wann rock right now' you are caught off guard for a moment when the following tempo suddenly accelerates, then comes to a sudden stop. I do believe that this clever use of tempo, the catchy hook line and the head bopping beats are the elements that will secure the success of this song and get Maxsta's name in the
forefront of people's minds.

It's always refreshing to see someone take on hip hop in a unique way, and Maxsta does have that special something when it comes to creating unforgettable slices of hip hop that when put together make an attractive, well made, domineering hip hop pie. If you look at fellow artists, like Jay-Z, Notorious B.I.G, Tinie, Lupe Fiasco or Drake, who I am on to next, they all exist in the same genre but they drive their own unique
vehicles that are slightly different to the next. In hip hop, you need to have that
slightly different take if you want to stand out from the rest, and I think Maxsta just might have that, so watch out in the future for his vehicle making an entrance on the hip hop highway ( I am full of cheesy metaphors today).

Now on to Drake's new release, 'Crew Love', fourth track off the platinum 2011 release and 18 track monster of an album 'Take Care'. Featuring The Weeknd, this track
intertwines soulful lyrics, serene vocals and smooth music accompaniment with a slicing percussion beat riff that cuts across every smooth verse and takes the track from r&b to hip hop and back again within a couple of seconds. This unique approach works
tremendously well and is actually rather refreshing, keeping the listener on their toes as they constantly await the next slicing riff which interrupts the smooth, easy soul that predominatntly exists on this record. The Weeknd give the track integrity and
Drake provides the substance and together this track is a seriously clever combination. It isn't a whopper of a tune, or one that will create waves, but it is a very well made record that will most probably recruit new members to the Drake army that has swept the globe.

These two new hip hop treats are ones you will want to get a hold of and I hope you
find yourself hip hop dancing an nodding your head in approval just like I do

WHO'S TOURING? NOVEMBER/ DECEMBER

So I figured that it was about time for another edition of 'Who's Touring' as July is speeding ahead faster than ever towards the Autumn/Winter season of live musical goodness. As I said before in the last 'Who's Touring' post, I would love to make this a regular feature and as the last post proved to be far more popular than I expected it to be, you can now expect to see a 'Who's Touring' update every month. This way you will hopefully find an artist you want to see four to five months in advance, meaning you have a better chance of acquiring brilliant seats and that your days of jumping up and down in frustration, as you realise you have missed an opportunity to see your favourite artist, are no more.
So my fellow music lovin' people, feast your eyes on this pick and mix of musical goodness that I have concocted especially for you...

NOVEMBER 2012
DECEMBER 2012
I hope that this has once again proven useful to you and if any of the 'Who's Touring' posts have helped you secure tickets to see an artist live, I would love to know and if you want to say, just drop me a comment on this post. Ciao for now (uncool send off right there).

CHASE THE RUNAWAYS

I am thrilled to be here saying that The Killers are BACK. New single 'Runaways' has infiltrated into the first of a long line of radio shows and I cannot tell you how excited I am that they have finally given us a fantastic new offering. I am sure that this 80's-esque creation will be a definite musical companion this summer and having been denied a fix of The Killers for so long, many just won't be able to get enough of this new single, me included.

The single was given its first airing on the 10th of July, presumably on the Zane Lowe show as that's the place I first came across 'Runaways' earlier this week. It's a great piece of work that when listened to, makes me imagine soaring down the American outbacks in a ruby red Cadillac beneath endless turquoise skies and amongst deep golden sands, wind rushing through my hair.As you can see, I have a fairly active imagination that music seems to unleash to great extents. But yes, back to The Killers.

The last we heard of The Killers was the magnificent 2008 release, 'Day and Age', which has been a firm favourite in my record collection for the last three years ( I finally bought it in 2009). It's one of those records that never gets old. No matter how many years pass, or how many days since you last gave it a spin, you can just put this record on and it's like an everlasting fountain of youth. It doesn't matter that I've listened to 'Spaceman' at least a hundred times or more, as every time I listen to it, I fall in love with it all over again and this goes for the all other songs on the album too. 'Day and Age' was one of my first introductions to Indie and it gave me a musical direction in which to pursue, as I was falling out of love with McFly and all those NOW albums on my I-Pod.

Whenever I listen to a song by The Killers, I always think to myself 'now this is where I belong', their music almost feels like it was made for me, or I was made for their music. I think that it's important to have an artist with whom you can have this connection, as it's rare to find, and like when you buy a dog, or any other animal, you end of forging a lifelong dedication and companionship that never fades or dies. 'Day and Age' was easily one of the best albums of 2008, and that is why I am so excited about their new album, 'Battle Born', as if it can only match the brilliance of 'Day and Age', that would be enough. However with four years in the making, unlike the normal two, surely it is a definite that this album is going to be something of the amazing variety?

If 'Runaways' is any indication of what is to come, then I reckon that The Killers have plunged back into what they do best, but have really exuded in some elements for which they are known for, such as that 80's feel, and I really do think that 'Battle Born' will contain some of their best work yet. I don't know how I can wait till September, now I know that a new album is finally within touching distance, but if I have made it three years, two months should be nothing.

FLY TO OWL CITY

Since 2009, I have been a fan of Owl City, aka, the amazing Adam Young. I came across his melodically magical and electronic infused song 'Fireflies' back in 2009 through an American website on which I asked for tips on new music. Those Americans were ahead of the game, pointing me towards 'Fireflies' which was fast becoming a hit over the pond, and so I was given a head start in discovering the magic of Owl City way before both the band and song caused ripples over here.

Anyone who has listened to an Owl City song cannot deny that listening to Adam's music is like being caught up in a dream, or emerged in a pool of imagination from which you feel no desire to escape. Adam concocts a magical and eclectic combination of trickling beats, electronic imprints, serene tones and softly sung lyrics that when combined seem to create a glistening potion that washes over you and enlightens you. The music of Owl City seems to pinpoint the segment of the brain in which our imagination is stored, and unleashes it, compliments it and encourages it to run wild. The music Adam produces makes you dream whilst wide awake and it is a very serene experience. Early mornings or late evenings are when Owl City is your perfect companion, and I reckon this is because Adam's music is reminiscent of dreams, and these two points of the day are when we are in our most dream like states.

I really think that it is impossible to listen to an Owl City song and not feel happy, blissful, peaceful and eclipsed in one of the most beautiful sensations I personally have ever felt. It is a sensation hard to describe, but listening to the music of Owl City will allow you to experience this indescribable sensation too. Adam is an insomniac, or at least he was, as well as an introvert with a shyness that means he is not like many of the artists on the music scene, past or present. All of these characteristics, when put together, seem to form the perfect key to unlocking the music for which Adam Young is known for. These characteristics, when viewed and used positively, can end up being valuable tools when it comes to producing something uniquely and magically special. If you were to take away even one, I don't think that beautiful music could be produced as each characteristic is crucial to the key.

Fast forward three years and Adam is on the verge of releasing his fourth studio album this August, The Midsummer Station, and I have a feeling that it will be one to have in your record collection. On his blog owlcityblog.com Adam talks about the time and effort that have gone into his new offering, saying of his record that "it may not change the world,  but it will touch it" and for an artist to be so confident about their work surely means that it must be something special? Owl City has gone off the radar the last couple of years as the magic of 'Fireflies' wore off the enchanted public, however if Adam's claims about his new record are proven correct, and I truly hope they are, he may just find that Owl City once again becomes a must see musical destination in the minds of people everywhere.
